Defenseman Ed Jovanovski scored his second goal of the game with 51.9 seconds left in overtime and the Florida Panthers ended the New Jersey Devils’ team-record eight-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J.

John Vanbiesbrouck had 28 saves, including one on a close-in shot by Patrik Elias early in the overtime, in handing New Jersey its first loss since Nov. 4.

The common factor in both losses is the Devils started Mike Dunham in goal in place of Martin Brodeur, who has won his last 12 starts. Bobby Holik scored for New Jersey, which lost for the second time in 13 games.

The game marked the return of Bill Guerin to the Devils’ lineup. He missed the first 21 games while negotiating a contract and only signed Friday in an effort to get a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.

Sabres 6, Islanders 1: Dominik Hasek, the league’s most valuable player and top goaltender last year, was cheered for the first time this season when starting lineups were announced, and he responded with 28 saves against New York.

For Hasek, it was the first time in a month he had won at Marine Midland Arena. It also was the first time this season that fans have been off his case concerning remarks he made about former coach Ted Nolan.

Jason Dawe and Donald Audette scored two goals apiece, and the Sabres scored four times in the third period. Robert Reichel scored the Islanders’ only goal.

Stars 2, Bruins 0: Goals by Dallas’ Jamie Langenbrunner on a power play with 12 seconds left in the second period and by Pat Verbeek in the third in Boston gave the Bruins their second shutout loss in three days.

Ed Belfour got his NHL-leading fifth shutout of the season. He stopped 22 shots and ran his record to 11-4-4.

Penguins 4, Rangers 3: Jaromir Jagr returned to the Pittsburgh lineup after missing four games with a hip flexor and scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Penguins the victory at home.

Lightning 4, Flames 3: Rob Zamuner scored twice, including the game-winner, as Tampa Bay beat visiting Calgary.

Tampa Bay (4-16-2) won for the second straight time after a 16-game winless streak (0-15-1) as Daren Puppa stopped 20 shots.

Mikael Nylander scored twice for Calgary (4-15-5), which had trailed 4-1.

Sharks 4, Capitals 2: San Jose scored on three of its first six shots and Kelly Hrudey had 32 saves as the Sharks stretched their winning streak to three in Landover, Md.

Red Wings 5, Canadiens 2: Tomas Holmstrom scored twice in the second period and added an assist to lift Detroit to victory in Montreal.

Canadiens goalie Jocelyn Thibault allowed four goals on 18 shots and was lifted for Andy Moog to open the third period.

Oilers 1, Senators 0: Rookie Mike Watt scored his first NHL goal late in the final period to give Curtis Joseph and Edmonton the victory in Kanata, Ontario.

The loss extended the Senators’ winless streak to eight games.

Mighty Ducks 2, Blues 0: Guy Hebert stopped 23 shots, and rookies Jeremy Stevenson and Jeff Nielsen scored their first NHL goals to lead Anaheim in St. Louis.

The victory snapped a six-game winless streak for the Ducks. The Blues have lost two straight shutouts.
