I was surprised to learn that Eddie Eagle is under attack (“NRA safety cartoon attacked,” Main news, Nov. 20).
As the article correctly reports, I have never seen Eddie Eagle holding a gun, nor have I ever seen Eddie Eagle advocating gun ownership. His message to children, upon finding a gun in the course of their play, is effective and simple: “Stop. Don’t touch. Leave the area. Tell an adult.”
Regardless of the source, why would anyone take exception to this potentially lifesaving advice? Even if all guns were made illegal, a large percentage of the population would still choose to own guns. Therefore, this advice will always be valuable.
Almost all the irresponsible handling and use of guns that I see comes from Hollywood, not Eddie Eagle.
