South Cedar Road is the next major street in line for renovation, New Lenox officials said Tuesday night.

After learning the project qualifies for the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Local Agency Pavement Preservation policy, trustees voted to set aside money to resurface South Cedar Road between U.S. Highway 30 and Illinois Highway.

The village will contribute 20 percent of the estimated $180,000 total, with the remaining 80 percent coming from the Will County Governmental League Surface Transportation Program.

Improvements also are forthcoming on the northern part of the highway.

Trustees allocated $48,000 for preliminary engineering on the proposed renovation of the bridge spanning Hickory Creek on the north side of Cedar Road.

The project is eligible for funding under the federal Highway Bridge Rehabilitation and Replacement Program, village officials said.

In another matter, the Village Board proclaimed New Lenox the “Football Capital of Illinois,” because Lincoln-Way High School and Providence Catholic High School are in upcoming state football championship games. The youth football team, the Mustangs, will be playing in a national championship game soon.
