It was standing room only in the gym of Central Road Elementary School in Rolling Meadows, as 3rd- and 4th-grade music pupils presented a pre-Thanksgiving musical for parents, teachers and friends.

The program featured a collection of Native American and Pilgrim songs, games and customs that the children had learned as part of an integrated studies program.

“We wanted the program to coincide with things that the children are already studying, and to showcase what they have been learning in music class,” said Principal Jill Weininger.

The 4th-grade pupils, who are studying immigration, dressed as Pilgrims and sang Pilgrim songs highlighting important events in America’s history.

The 3rd graders, who are studying the customs of Native Americans from various regions, dressed as Indians, sang Indian hymns and demonstrated Indian games and traditions with drums, rings and sticks.

“It is really neat that they are learning valuable lessons about our heritage and the things we have to be thankful for,” said Sandy Davies of Rolling Meadows. Davies’ 10-year-old daughter, Kelly, played a Pilgrim in Tuesday’s show.

“The program is intended to help us all to remember what Thanksgiving is really about,” said Lisa Gerkin, the Central Road music instructor who coordinated the show.

District 15’s music curriculum for kindergarten through 6th grade stresses basic concepts in music theory, singing, reading and composing music and instrument playing.

Many Central Road pupils said they are grateful for home and family this season.

“My sister and I are going to help cook the Thanksgiving dinner,” said 8-year-old Katie Wanninger.
