Take a step back. Smell the fresh air. Appreciate the beams of sunshine. Touch base with your inner self. These are all cliches that seem to ring true for the Thanksgiving holiday. We can all find something to be thankful for during this autumn of our lives.

“I cried when I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet.” This is an old Arabic quote, author unknown, that makes you think. You are not as bad off as you think you are. Look on the bright side of the negatives of life. No one could be as put-upon as Job in the Old Testament, yet he still persisted in his love for his God.

When you sit down for that traditional or non-traditional Thanksgiving Day meal, whether it is turkey, hot dogs, or whatever, you can thank your lucky stars that you’re an American. You are probably better off than 95 percent of the rest of the Earth’s population. You may not be eating a buffet at the Ritz-Carlton, or enjoying the country club atmosphere, but you are free, not involved in a war and you have an abundance of opportunities that most people would die for.

Thank you, God! Thank you, Mom and Dad! Thank you, United States of America!
