After reading Alan G. Artner’s “Weak impressions: Art Institute’s Renoir show short on style and substance” (Arts & Entertainment, Oct. 19), I felt reluctant and disappointed about going to see the exhibit.
The Tribune art critic criticized the quality of the loaned paintings as not being as fine as those owned by the institute, and that what is represented here is “lacking the parade of eye-dazzlers” that have been seen at other exhibits.
Mr. Artner, of course, is an art historian and knows technique and style but he writes with sarcasm and berating remarks. A good critic is a teacher who is someone you learn from and trust. I feel that Alan Artner betrayed his readers.
I’m thankful that I went to the Renoir exhibit. If you haven’t seen the Renoir exhibit, do so. You will come away with a warm smile.
