Charles Goodman Smith, 72, a former advertising executive from Winnetka, died Friday in Evanston Hospital. He was born in Evanston and spent most of his life in Winnetka. Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Illinois in 1950 and worked as a classified advertising salesman for the Tribune. Later, Mr. Smith worked in the international advertising departments of Newsweek and Time magazines. During World War II, he was a corporal in the U.S.Marine Corps. As a scout in Iwo Jima, Mr. Smith was wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart. Mr. Smith served on the board of trustees of the now-defunct Henrotin Hospital and was a director of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. Survivors include his wife, Martha; two sons, Collyer and Charles Hawley; two daughters, Missy Banis and Martha McNamara; three brothers; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Christ Church, 784 Sheridan Rd., Winnetka.
