“We are not OK if we are not doing the things that the media and society tell us to do,” said therapist Melissa Ann Bailey.

When expectations of being the perfect wife, mother and lover are not met, self-esteem diminishes, according to Bailey.

Some men, too, are plagued by concerns of inadequacy.

To meet the needs of those people, Horizons Behavioral Health is offering “Life Changers: A Men and Women’s Self-Esteem and Empowerment Group” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at Horizons Behavioral Health, 970 S. McHenry Ave., Crystal Lake.

Bailey, who also wears the hat of program development coordinator at Horizons, said that group members are given homework to determine what they want to do, rather than what they think they should do.

To register or to get more information, call Horizons Behavioral Health at 800-765-9999. There is a $30 fee per session.
