A program funded by Baxter Healthcare Corp. to provide middle school science teachers with additional training has received rave reviews from the School District 60 Board in Waukegan.
The program, Students and Teachers as Research Scientists, offers teachers five weeks of research at Deerfield-based Baxter every summer and follows up with two semesters of training during the school year courtesy of Baxter and Barat College in Lake Forest.
The program was inaugurated last summer, with three middle school teachers participating. Some participants made a presentation to the board at a recent meeting.
One was Susan Krause, a former Webster Middle School science teacher who is now the district’s technology consultant for kindergarten through 8th grade.
She said plans call for extending the program to science teachers in high school in the 1998-99 school year and to those in elementary school in 1999-2000.
