The Jim Coates article on speech-recognition software (Business.Technology, Dec. 1) made me laugh. It reminded me of my initial meeting with Nathan Myhrvold, chief technical officer of Microsoft. At that time Microsoft was working to perfect its own speech-recognition software. The test was whether, when the speaker asked “Recognize speech?” the computer typed “Wreck a nice beach?”
