Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

In his Dec. 5 report (Sports) on the Bears’ post-practice news briefing the previous day, John Mullin quoted the Bears’ Tony Wise as saying: “They’re playing because they love to be a professional football player. If not, go get a job with Allstate.”

As an Allstate employee, I suppose I should be pleased to see my employer’s name in print. But the implication that working for Allstate is an easy alternative to the life of a pro football player is inaccurate, to say the least. The work is demanding, stressful and requires availability 24 hours a day seven days a week.

It would appear that in 1997, at least, the Bears have a tough time finding 22 men who will show up consistently for three hours on Sunday.
