All of the talk about eliminating the IRS or having a flat tax or having a consumption tax–it all misses the mark.
The problem is not primarily in the mechanism that takes the tax money from us. The problem is the overspending of our federal government for virtually all of the last 40 years that has created the deficit. Until spending is harnessed–which seems unlikely–the government will feel it necessary to continue to get the maximum plucking of the goose with the minimum amount of hissing.
