Rev. Robert A. Sheridan, 79, longtime professor at Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago, died Thursday in Christ Hospital and Medical Center, Oak Lawn. Father Sheridan was an standout basketball player at St. Rita’s High School of Chicago in the 1930s before he entered Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1935. Father Sheridan was ordained in 1943 and went on to spend 45 years at Quigley, a high school for young men preparing to be priests, teaching English and serving as spiritual director. He served for 31 years at St. Margaret of Scotland. He also served at St. Hilary Church in Chicago and St. Catherine of Siena in Oak Park. Father Sheridan earned a master’s degree in English from Notre Dame University in 1951 and since about 1965 had attended virtually every home football game, according to his brother Rev. William H. Sheridan. Quigley seminary created a scholarship honoring Father Sheridan and his brother. Father Sheridan is survived by two other brothers, John J. and Richard P.; and two sisters, Mary Margaret Coughlin and Colette Coughlin. Father Sheridan will lie in state from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 99th and Throop Streets. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church.
