Regarding the David Standish essay “What was wrong with dull?” (Magazine, Dec. 7).
The essay brought back so many memories of the wonderful old Field Museum of my childhood days. I remember going there on field trips.
The dioramas were always a big favorite–you caught the atmosphere perfectly! They were always dimly lit and static in display, which made them wonderful to just sit in front of and daydream.
The hall of gems and the exhibits from the 1920s’ expeditions to such exotic places as Tibet made my imagination race, and you were right: It was quiet and lent itself to wonderful flights of imagination.
We always looked for the elephants in the main hall to welcome us as friends.
Thanks again for a return to less hectic days.
