The school board of Elementary District 12 agreed Tuesday night that school officials should enforce a policy that limits each student to two field trips a year.

Board President Maureen Woodall noted discrepancies among classes in the number of field trips taken.

“Students pay a fee each year during registration that is intended to cover two field trips a year per grade,” Woodall said.

Woodall indicated that cost overruns are not a regular problem because most teachers visit the same sites each year and are aware of the costs.

The school board agreed to study the amount of time spent on field trips, as well as their educational value.

Some board members have suggested eliminating an annual trip taken by 8th graders to the Great America amusement park in Gurnee. They said the trip serves no educational function.

However, school officials said some parents have expressed opposition to canceling that trip.
