Regarding “Child-oriented?” (Voice, Dec. 7), by Jean Alberti:

She uses faulty logic when comparing rehiring preferences given to veterans to her proposed three-year rehiring preference for women who choose to stay home with children. The fault is that while having children is entirely voluntary, service to our country is often not. Just ask a Vietnam vet. Comparing women who choose to have children and then wish to return to the work force to those men and women who served our country and lost arms, legs and lives is a huge insult.

Further, if a corporate policy is established, (voluntarily, not by government edict), rehiring after three-year absences should apply equally to fathers and mothers. Making this a woman-only issue further dilutes the father’s role in the care and nurturing of children.
