The White House, in downplaying the recent overture by Iranian President Mohammed Khatami, claimed to be seeking “deeds, not words” and chided Iran for developing weapons of mass destruction, for supporting terrorism and for impeding the Middle East peace talks.

Given that the U.S. has (and continues to develop) the biggest cache of weapons of mass destruction in the entire world; given that the U.S. has a history of aiding terrorists such as the contras and government leaders who terrorize their own people (Fulgencio Batista, Anastasio Somoza, the Shah of Iran, “Papa Doc” and “Baby Doc” Duvalier, Ferdinand Marcos, Augusto Pinochet, to name but a few); finally, given that the U.S. has stood idly by while its client, the Benjamin Netanyahu regime, has made provocation after provocation against the Palestinians via its policy of illegal settlements–given all this, we can only hope that Iran doesn’t put in place the same preconditions for dialogue with the U.S. that the U.S. has demanded for dialogue with Iran.
