For 32 minutes Saturday, Joliet couldn’t seize control of its first-round game against No. 16 Glenbard West in the Benet/Naperville North tournament.

In fact, Joliet’s first lead in the game didn’t come until the buzzer sounded. That’s when Brandi Teamer, a sophomore, gave Joliet a 55-53 triumph in Naperville when she scored the game-winning basket off a rebound.

“I think they made a mistake of not coming out on us at the end,” said Joliet coach Gerald Edwards, who instructed his team to spread the offense. “We wanted (Lori) Shelby to get fouled and make the free throw, but it worked out well anyway.”

With 3 seconds left, Shelby missed a three-pointer, which Teamer rebounded for her game-winning shot. Glenbard West (8-3) had led by 11 points with 5:34 left but did not score the rest of the game.

Glenbard’s Kristi Faulkner, who scored 20 first-half points, was held to seven in the second half.

“We went into the locker room and we knew we had to go box-and-one and stay on (Faulkner), because she was killing me,” Edwards said.

Shelby led Joliet (8-5) with 19 points. Mary McNair and Tiffany Cornelius each added 12, and Teamer totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds.

In action at Benet, No. 5 Wheaton-Warrenville South (11-1) trailed at the half but regrouped for a 71-37 rout of East Aurora. East Aurora had only six players as recent injuries and disciplinary problems have decimated the team. But behind Teresa Reynolds’ 20 first-half points, East Aurora (3-8) led 28-24 at the half.

“It was time to concentrate on (Reynolds and Nakisha Shaw) a little more,” Wheaton South coach Jim Allured said of his team’s second-half comeback. “Maybe I should have recognized it sooner.”

Reynolds and Shaw scored all of East Aurora’s first-half points. Reynolds, who hit four three-pointers in that half, was scoreless in the second; Shaw finished with 14.

The victors were led by Charliss Ridley’s 21 points, Kristen Miller’s 16 and Ali Klaas’ 13.
