I was appalled to read about the activities of a Christian missionary group in Chicago calling itself a Jewish religious organization (“Russian emigres caught between Jews, Jesus,” Page 1, Dec. 15). But my distress was deepened when I learned that the group has appropriated the name of the synagogue that I have the honor to serve as rabbi.

Congregation Kol Emeth is a part of the Conservative movement and has served the Jewish community in Skokie, where it is located, and the wider community since its founding in 1967.

It goes without saying that our Congregation Kol Emeth has no connection whatsoever with the group named in your article. Indeed, our goals are diametrically opposed: We are working to promote Judaism, while they are seeking to undermine it. And it is ironic that this missionary group should have chosen the name Kol Emeth, which is Hebrew for the Voice of Truth, since their activities are based on deception.

I hope and trust that neither Christians nor Jews will be deceived.
