It was a blustery and overcast day, befitting the wintry chill. My wife and I were comfortably settled in a newly remodeled, upscale eating establishment. Then an old woman burst in upon the patrons and in a shaky but shrill voice pleaded for help for she was a homeless person.

At first I was startled and wondered if we were witnessing a spontaneous theatrical performance, so authentic was the wardrobe and makeup (or lack of). But the terror in the eyes and the pitch of the utterance were of a desperate human being.

As management intervened and escorted the woman away, a “Kodak moment” developed and froze time as I witnessed a cherished incident in my fleeting life.

A busboy, probably earning the minimum wage, without hesitation reached into his pocket and placed a dollar bill in the woman’s fragile hand. That simple gesture still brings a tear to my eyes even today. That spirit is the essence of what makes the world go round and fuels the hope that all people can live together in the ways that God has planned it!
