Pardon My French (Matador) (star) (star) (star)

F***, by nature of its name, exists to exceed expectations. With its eye-catching moniker, one would not expect a quiet, country-tinged pop band, indie-rock shy but smart as Pavement. But that’s just what this San Francisco quartet has to offer: low-key melancholia and surprisingly sensitive songcraft that will baffle those who rashly assume “Pardon My French,” the band’s third album, to be anything other than gentle and melodic. While Mom, the FCC and other figures of authority might not take a liking to the band’s name, they couldn’t possibly have any qualms about the music; these 16 sad songs will convert even the most incredulous listener.
