Steve Maltais scored twice as the Wolves used an onslaught of 49 shots to shut down the Las Vegas Thunder 4-2 in front of 10,101 Sunday at the Rosemont Horizon.
Coming off a split of back-to-back games in Kansas City, the Wolves picked up their fourth straight win at the Horizon in their first contest there since Dec. 17.
Maltais, who recorded his 21st and 22nd goals in the game, said the 5-4 loss to the Kansas City Blades on Saturday was a catalyst for the team.
“We’d been on a pretty good roll,” Maltais said. “Anytime you lose, it certainly wakes you up. Tonight guys sucked it up for the good of the team. We didn’t have a easy schedule; we played three in three nights, but (goalie Wendell Young) played extremely well for us and it was a total team effort.”
Young, now an IHL-best 20-3-2, has won 13 straight and 17 of his last 18 games.
Tim Breslin put the Wolves ahead 3-1 with 5 minutes 56 second left in the second period with his sixth goal of the season. Breslin scored on a nearly rink-long play after Tom Tilley intercepted a Thunder pass in the Wolves zone, carried it into neutral territory and fed it to Breslin at the left point.
“Tom Tilley made a great pass up to me and I was in alone,” said Breslin. “You’ve got to bury those chances when you get them because when it’s just you and the goalie, it’s a 50-50 chance.”
