Tomorrow’s the big New Year’s night, and we know you’ll want to get it right: wear the right stuff, have the right ‘do. After all, it would be a cruel trick of fate to have a bad hair day on the very last one of the year.

So start thinking about a little last-minute hair care. And keep it real. It’s way too late for a totally new ‘do before the big night, so try something a little different. Here are a few quick tricks.

CURL

Why not try the wildest new ‘do around? These twin twists on each side of your skull are simple. Start with pigtails that you make really high on your head, then wrap them into baby buns. (We sometimes tuck hair sticks into ours -more on those later -and we NEVER worry whether our part is perfect in back, cuz we like to keep things casual.)

COLOR

Get in a party mood with truly temporary hair color, which is the only product everyone -even velvetheads like the guy at the right -can use. Ardell International makes Hair Flair, a wand-applicator mascara that comes in eight killer colors (think Jade, Daffodil and Iris) and can be instantly stroked on. The company also makes delicious Haircolor Candy, a pomade in eight great colors (like Kickin’ Kiwi or Groovin’ Grape) that you finger on in fat chunks. Both products wash out easily; look for them for $5 to $6 each at beauty supply stores and mass merchandisers.

CONQUER

There’s more than one way to tame wild tresses. If your locks are way out of control, stick them up in a bun and stab it with the coolest hair sticks you can find -there are plenty to choose from in the hair section of every store we’ve been to lately. (The ones at the upper left of this page are by Rivera and cost about $6 a set at Marshall Field’s, Carson Pirie Scott and J.C. Penney.)

To just keep long locks out of your eyes while you’re getting wild and crazy, try a hair spring. They’re just what they sound like: plastic springs that open, then close once you have them around your head. You just stick them in your hair like a headband. But unlike a headband, they don’t fall off. Plus they come in every color imaginable, or with pearl points or glitter. (The pink and baby-blue hair springs to the lower right are by Rivera and cost $6 for a trio or $4 for fancier singles at Marshall Field’s, Carson Pirie Scott and J.C. Penney.)

CONTROL

If your hair needs just a bit of a boost -say a dash of color or a slight flourish, or maybe a touch of help because some goofy chunk won’t lie right – iron it out with some clippys. These little barrettes aren’t only a sweet buy, they’re a smart investment because they’re cheap, sweet and supereasy to use. Coolest yet, they work on every kind of hair. They pop open and clip shut with a flick of your finger and come in every color or finish (think glitter or leopard spots) imaginable. The ones shown at right are Rivera clippys, $4 a set at Marshall Field’s, Carson Pirie Scott and J.C. Penney.
