“Today, Devin, Lori, Tonya, Amanda, Kate and Ben, the cast of Chicago’s KidNews,
got in a big fight. They got in a huge fight.”
– Evan G.
Wanna know this year’s highlight for the KidNews staff (besides every single payday)? It was when we visited Mr. Verisario’s 5th-grade class at Kipling Middle School in Deerfield. Once we got there, we kind of acted up. The class then wrote stories about our misbehavin’ ways. We took a paragraph or so from each kid and compiled them into one whopper story to show you what happened. So here’s the story, in the class’ words:
“Recently, in Mr. V.’s room, KidNews was paying a visit. On Tuesday, Nov. 18, the KidNews staff walked in. Two of them anyway.”
– Josh W.
“Everyone in the class was wondering where the rest of the KidNews staff was.”
– Tony M.
“The editor, Devin, and the associate editor, Lori, started talking and said: `The other people from KidNews aren’t here yet.’ “
– Rebecca F.
Devin and Lori started explaining how KidNews works when…”
– Zach L.
“The other people finally walked in.”
– Rebecca F.
“To explain what happened when everyone got here can be said in one word: extraordinary!”
Zach L.
” `Why are you so late?’ asked Devin. `Well, I thought I saw Elvis,’ replied Tonya, the art director.”
– Marni C.
“Everyone could tell Tonya loved Elvis, because she was wearing an Elvis shirt and had an Elvis picture.”
– Jackie S.
“Devin yelled, `Elvis is dead!’ “
– Marni C.
“Devin was being mean to Tonya for liking Elvis.”
– Tyler O.
“Then Amanda the reporter barged in, but the editor interrupted: `What is your excuse, Amanda?’ Amanda said: `Um, I bought some stuff for my grandma. Also, if Elvis was really there, I would want to cover the story.’ “
– Sean B.
“Devin didn’t look like she believed her.”
– Robin M.
” `I had to stop at the Urban Outfitters store to pick up something for Grandma,’ Amanda said. She took out an air-filled pillow and a rainbow light bulb.”
Gia C.
” `So that’s why you were late?’ asked Devin. `That is a very stupid reason! This is important stuff we’re dealing with!’ “
– Cari S.
“Did Tonya really see Elvis? Would Amanda really pull over to cover the story? Nobody is really sure. But one thing we all knew is that Devin was mad!”
– Rena T.
“Lori and Devin started yelling at the rest of the crew, saying, `You know, I don’t appreciate you being late!’ “
– Kimi O.
“Then Devin yelled: `I can do it without you. No excuses!’ “
– Steven T.
“Suddenly, Devin started to have a spaz.”
– Whitney B.
“Everyone was still and listening closely. `Well, if you don’t care about KidNews, then you can leave!’ screamed Devin with her face all hot.”
– Alyssa F.
” `Fine, we will!’ art director Kate said stoutly, and they walked out of the room.”
– Rena T.
“Lori said, `Aren’t you being a little harsh?’ `No!’ said Devin. `Well, fine! I am going with them!’ said Lori. `Fine! Go work for Microsoft!’ said Devin.”
– Martin C.
“Lori walked out, saying, `I might as well go see Bill Gates.’ “
– Mike D.
“And with that, Lori left, and Devin was like a leaf on the snowy ground; all by herself.”
– Natalie D.
“Lori left because she was tired of Devin bossing her around a lot.”
– Kristen O.
“As a witness, I was thinking how bad things always have to happen at the wrong time.”
– Laura L.
“Devin got what she deserved – feeling alone.”
– Scott W.
“The room was silent and Mr. V. was speechless.”
– Martin C.”
“Then Devin said, `Ah, that’s all over with. Let’s start.’ “
– Kyle F.
“Then the staff came back and Devin was joking. All the staff knew that Devin was joking.”
– Jeremy P.
And so it was. We staged the whole fight and then asked the class to write about it. Boy did they! Thanks, Mr. V’s class! (Beware, other readers – we may land in your class next…)
