Does anyone see the irony here? Cab drivers are concerned for their safety in poor neighborhoods. Meanwhile, our CTA is in the process of massive service cuts, many of them reducing service to disadvantaged communities. And our response is to issue 1,000 more medallions to put more cabs on the streets?
If we are concerned about access to transportation, why not talk about improving public transportation in poor neighborhoods? Public transportation is more affordable, improves our air quality and reduces road congestion. A thousand new cabs will make our traffic jams worse, increase pollution and make it harder for our current cab drivers to make a living.
