Samuel Mendelson, 85, a former color photo engraver for the Chicago Tribune and a director of youth programs for several area synagogues, died Saturday in Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla. Mr. Mendelson worked for the Chicago Tribune for 30 years before retiring in 1977 and moving to Florida. He developed many youth programs for the Maine Township Jewish Synagogue in Des Plaines and regularly worked at youth summer camps in Michigan. “When he was a youth director, the children always looked up to him,” his granddaughter, Binay Cahn, said. Other survivors include his wife, Ida; two daughters, Etta Miller and Marcia Cahn; two sons, Gene and Burt Cannell; two sisters; eight grandchildren;and two great-grandchildren. Services will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Weinstein Family Services Wilmette Chapel, 111 Skokie Blvd., Wilmette.
