Dr. Jerome Katz, 72, a psychiatrist at Forest Hospital in Des Plaines for nearly 40 years and a longtime Rogers Park resident, died Monday in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. A native of Hegewisch and graduate of Bowen High School on the South Side, Dr. Katz served in the U.S. Army in Germany and the Philippines. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign, then received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Katz completed his psychiatric residency at the Veterans Administration’s West Side Medical Center before joining the staff of Forest Hospital in 1960. His work for charity included donating psychiatric services to the Ark, a social services agency for Russian immigrants. In addition to his work at Forest Hospital, Dr. Katz was on the staff at Rush North Shore Medical Center. Survivors include his wife, Irene: two daughters, Julie Katz and Laura Conover; two sons, Murray and David; a brother; and two grandsons. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Congregation Ezras Israel, 7001 N. California Blvd., Chicago.
