Jules Levinstein, 95, the owner and operator of a South Side lumber company for 50 years and active in charitable and civic organizations, died Saturday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital. A native of Rock Island, Mr. Levinstein moved to Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in the 1920s after graduating from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He soon established the Albert Lumber Co., a retail and supply operation at 3800 S. Western Ave. He operated the company for 50 years before retiring in the late 1970s. A Hyde Park resident for 70 years, Mr. Levinstein was a founder and past president of Congregation Rodfei Zedek in Hyde Park. Mr. Levinstein also served on the Mt. Sinai Hospital Board of Directors, Drexel Home for the Aged board and the East Hyde Park Association. He is survived by a brother and eight nieces and nephews. Services will be private.
