A judge suspended the Teamsters union election until a monitor completes his inquiry into James P. Hoffa’s fundraising efforts during the 1996 campaign.

U.S. District Judge David Edelstein on Wednesday ordered Michael Cherkasky to provide an update on the investigation within 30 days.

On Monday, Cherkasky told the judge he needed more time to determine the validity of the charges against Hoffa.

At that time, Hoffa’s campaign chairman, Tom Pazzi, protested the request, calling the inquiry a ” `get Hoffa’ fishing expedition.”

Fundraising allegations led to Ron Carey being stripped of his re-election victory over Hoffa in the 1996 vote, and to Carey’s being banned from participating in a rerun this year.

Carey, who has denied any wrongdoing, is on an unpaid leave as he mounts his defense.
