The state said Thursday it is succeeding in cutting the size of its statewide deer herd, but controversial hunts inside state parks won’t end any time soon.

The Department of Natural Resources said hunters took an estimated 104,000 deer during the archery, firearm and muzzleloader seasons, which ended Sunday. That’s about 15 percent lower than last year and is the first time in 17 years that the figure has dropped year-to-year.

The state’s success in reducing the herd won’t end those controversial hunts inside state parks, said Jim Mitchell, the state’s deer management biologist. He said control within the parks is a continuing need.
