Elgin Police Chief Charles Gruber announced Friday he is not going to take early retirement after all.
Gruber recently announced he was leaving to take a job as director of campus security for Elgin Community College, a post that would allow him to collect a police pension while working for the college. Gruber, 50, earns $89,000 a year as police chief.
“Both personally and professionally, this is not the right time for me to retire,” Gruber said in a statement released Friday.
Gruber joined the police department in 1990 and is credited with initiating community policing programs that have since gained national attention.
