The City Council has given its staff 30 days to test lighting configurations for a new type of back-yard court designed to allow for multiple sports uses, including basketball, in-line skating and skateboarding.
Naperville began regulating the courts in September, after reviewing a permit request from a Buttonwood subdivision resident seeking to have a 1,100-square-foot court with a plastic surface installed in her backyard on Palmetto Court.
Staff members said the Palmetto Court facility will be used to test lighting in the hopes of adding regulatory language to the September ordinance.
Naperville officials contacted other communities to see how they deal with lighting such courts.
Staff members said they visited a home in Glen Ellyn with such a court, but because that house is well-screened from nearby residences, little knowledge was gained for the Naperville case.
