French moviegoers plunked down their francs for “The Fifth Element” and “Men in Black” last year. The two films finished first and second, respectively, at the box office in 1997, reported the National Federation of French Cinemas.

Theater attendance, 148 million, was the best since 1986. French films lost market share in 1997, slipping to 31 percent from 37.5 in 1996. But films from the United States maintained a steady 60 percent share in France.
