A severe ice storm along the East Coast played havoc Saturday with a National Hockey League game and the U.S. Olympics short-track speedskating trials.

The game between the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens at the Molson Centre was called off when the storm system hit Ontario and Quebec.

The game was rescheduled for the night of March 12.

A Canadiens spokesman said the game was postponed in the interest of public safety.

“The Molson Centre is physically capable of staging the event,” Donald Beauchamp said. “But the ice on the buildings downtown and on the Molson Centre makes it extremely dangerous.”

Meanwhile, in Lake Placid, N.Y., state and local officials postponed the short-track speedskating trials, which were rescheduled for Sunday and Monday at the Olympic Ice Arena.

Much of the Lake Placid area was without power for more than two days before regaining it Saturday.

Officials of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, which operates the winter sports venues in and around the village, met Saturday and decided to push the event back to ensure prime ice conditions for the trials.
