In answer to David Standish’s question “What was wrong with dull?” (Magazine, Dec. 7)–absolutely nothing.
I join him in mourning the modernization of museum exhibits, and I will continue to favor the artistry and solitude found in the classic exhibits.
But there are still islands of antiquity, so to speak. At the risk of overwhelming the museum with those of us who love looking at stuffed birds, I recommend the Burpee Museum of Natural History in Rockford. We found this gem after planning a trip that was recommended in the “For Starters” column (Magazine, May 18). Three floors of an incredible number of dioramas, stuffed birds and animals, mineral collections, among others.
Oh, yes, and an occasional bench for contemplation. Mr. Standish would be pleased.
