A 21-year-old Hoffman Estates man received a $2.45 million settlement from several physicians who his attorney alleged were responsible for a misdiagnosis of his meningitis that led to his legs being amputated.

The settlement was reached recently in Cook County Circuit Court by attorneys for the physicians and Michael Schostok, a partner in the Waukegan law firm of Salvi and Schostok.

Michael Snelten was 16 years old in April 1993 when his father took him to the North Suburban Clinic in Hoffman Estates. He was treated for flu-like symptoms and released by David Nadelman, a pediatrician, Schostok said.

Later in the day, Snelten’s father took him to Edward Kogan, the family’s doctor. Kogan admitted the boy to Hoffman Estates Medical Center.

The disease spread into Snelten’s legs, requiring both to be amputated below the knee.
