The Voice of the People has recently aired some back-and-forth letters questioning the legitimacy of The Heartland Institute. Now based in Palatine, the institute just celebrated its 13th anniversary.
The Heartland has become a jewel of intellectual thought in the Midwest, getting involved in environmental issues, education and many other topics of special interest to our region of the country.
Of course, the institute has a mission statement and other explanatory information that interested parties would be well advised to call for. But the way I like to position The Heartland Institute is as follows:
When faced with a societal problem, is it better to first seek out a private-sector solution . . . or a government-sector solution? The Heartland Institute is motivated to first try to find a private-sector solution. There is no lack of individuals and institutions that are constantly trying to find still one more governmental solution. What’s the harm, then, of a handful of organizations that look first to the private sector?
