Summer school students in Community District 59 will have four extra days of class this year at no extra cost.

The district will offer a five-week summer school program from June 22 to July 24 for a total of 24 days. In 1997, the program ran for 20 days and enrolled 1,750 students.

School district officials had proposed increasing the student fees from $70 to $80, but board members decided to hold the line on the costs to encourage more children to attend.

Of the summer school’s estimated $470,000 cost, the school will pay about $246,000. The remainder will be paid through student fees.

The summer school program will be housed at Brentwood Elementary in Des Plaines, Devonshire Elementary in Des Plaines, Forest View Elementary in Mt. Prospect and Holmes Junior High in Mt. Prospect.
