Let’s Get Killed (Go! Beat/1500 Records) (star) (star) 1/2
When Belfast deejay David Holmes traveled to New York City in 1996, he brought along a DAT recorder to capture street denizens as they waxed philosophical about their city. “Let’s Get Killed” drapes the raw soundbites over a lazy, funky soundtrack, evoking the city’s nocturnal moods and providing a disjointed narrative of New York’s stew of hustlers, hawkers and street poets. Though Holmes’ takes on funk, dub and jazz are nothing new, he proves himself a thoughtful editor of the DAT material.
