Fox Mulder of “The X-Files” doesn’t know everything — when the dogged FBI agent needs to get the scoop on evil government doings, he turns to the conspiracy-minded Lone Gunmen, one of whom is played by Canadian actor Dean Haglund. Haglund’s got secrets of his own – he’s also a hard-working comic in his spare time. We caught up with him before he jetted to Chicago for a weekend’s worth of gigs at The Funny Bone in Naperville (call 630-955-0500 for details on Haglund’s Friday and Saturday shows).
Q. Do you have a lot of references to “The X-Files” in your act?
A. I actually improvise a brand-new episode of “The X-Files” on stage. Every show is different, and it’s based on audience suggestions.
Q. So is there competition among the Lone Gunmen?
A. Well, after (the recent Lone Gunmen-intensive episode) “Unusual Suspects,” someone e-mailed me (saying), “We’ve all been voting on who our favorite Lone Gunman is, and I was the only one who voted for you.” So I wrote back, “Yeah, the only women who write to me are the ones who want to share hair product tips.”
Q. What kind of messages do you get on your Web site (www.deanx.com)?
A. Well, they mainly say, “You rule, you’re my favorite Lone Gunman! Now can I have some free stuff?”
Q. Do you have people coming up to you and asking if all that conspiracy stuff is true?
A. Well, it’s actually the opposite — I have people coming up to me and saying, “Well, I shouldn’t say anything, but I worked in the military,” and then they’ll have some wacky story (about government plots). And my feeling is, “Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know!”
