Chance and Circumstance (Mercury) (star) (star) (star)
Maryland-native Neal Cody cites Bruce Springsteen as being a prime influence in his music, but I’d be surprised if Steve Earle didn’t provide just as much inspiration to this raspy voiced country-rocker. “Tainted,” which opens the album, certainly begs the question. Cody’s an insightful songwriter; his tales find the dark and dangerous corners of the human soul and can be extremely unsettling (“Chance and Circumstance,” “Heaven in the Dark”), as well as explosive and bluesy. Producer Keith Stegall lets all the rough-hewn poetry and emotion pour through in this impressive debut.
