If today’s new homes seem to be bigger, your eyes aren’t failing you. According to the National Association of Home Builders (a trade group), new homes during 1996 (the latest statistical year) averaged 2,120 square feet. That’s up from 1,660 square feet in 1973. “A greater proportion of those new homes built today are designed for trade-up buyers, a more affluent segment of the population that can afford large houses rather than for first-time buyers,” says the association’s executive vice president, Kent Colton.
