The ethics arguments surrounding human cloning expose our self-centered world view. I haven’t heard one word about the urgent need for adoption or the negative affects our already burgeoning population has on the human poor and our non-human animal brethren. This highlights our intrinsic selfishness and that of our culture.

There are more students in most area high schools than gorillas in the wild, as most estimates hold that there are fewer than 600 mountain gorillas, and the human population surrounding them will sooner or later annihilate them. Our very overpowering presence guarantees, at the least, that other living things will be pressured to move to ever-smaller areas, and at the worst, their outright slaughter.

There is no reason any resources should be spent on helping infertile couples conceive. Their inability to breed is a blessing in a world too full of humans who don’t care. The resources and energy would be better spent on making life better for the people who are already here.

Societal pressure should be brought to force consideration of adoption first, even with fertile couples, and taxation should pressure couples to have fewer children. Our rhetoric points toward community but, in reality, our concerns are only inward.
