Fern Vanneman, 101, a former teacher and Evanston homemaker, died Sunday in Evanston Hospital. Born and raised in Normal, Mrs. Vanneman graduated from Illinois State University in 1918, a year after she married. She taught 4th and 5th grades in Springfield and then in El Paso, Ill. Mrs. Vanneman stopped teaching and became a homemaker after moving to Evanston in 1923. She was an officer in the Woman’s Club of Evanston and helped maintain the building and grounds at 1702 Chicago Ave. Mrs. Vanneman also served with the Parent Teacher Association at Haven Junior High School. Mrs. Vanneman is survived by a son, former Evanston mayor Edgar Vanneman Jr.; and two grandchildren. Services will be private.
