The Naperville City Council decided Tuesday night to delay a vote on a controversial plan to shift the proposed site of a cellular tower from Naperville’s downtown post office on Washington Street to a spot in a nearby city-owned parking lot.

The decision gives more time to city staff members seeking to persuade tower proponents to find an alternative location in the downtown area. Proponents include the company proposing the 150-foot antenna, UniSite Inc., and the carriers that would use the tower that could be disguised as a large flagpole.

Council members said they are frustrated by a lack of information from UniSite on why alternative sites already proposed would not work. UniSite officials said Tuesday they have been hampered in their efforts to get such information because the companies that will use the tower believe it is confidential.

The council members said UniSite needs to relay to the carriers the seriousness of the situation. “Tell them we want to have the information or they won’t have a tower in the downtown area,” said Councilman Douglas Krause.
