John Walliser has the right to oppose the proposed southern extension of Interstate Highway 355 (Voice, Jan. 12). With that right, however, comes an obligation for accuracy and honesty. Instead, Walliser distorted facts and peddled innuendoes.
Walliser’s allegation that the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority ignores directives by the General Assembly is fiction. He omitted any reference to Senate Joint Resolution 14, which authorized the authority to construct the southern extensions of I-355 and the northern extension of Illinois 53 as toll facilities.
Walliser’s manipulation of the terms “public” and “public-interest groups” as being excluded from the decision-making process implies that locally elected government representatives and other groups supporting the southern extension are not legitimate. Sorry, the U.S. is still a representative democ-racy, and the public includes everyone, not just opponents.
Walliser needs to start playing fairly.
