Ed Sherman writes that “the golfer should be able to withstand all the physical challenges” (Tribune, Jan. 17) and thus argues that Casey Martin, who has a disability affecting his walking, should not be able to use a cart, and carts should remain unavailable to all on the pro tour.

Since physical strength and endurance are so much a part of the game, let’s not give Casey Martin any advantage. In fact, why not let all the professionals carry their bags, hold their umbrellas and find their balls in the rough? Then we’ll see who is a real man or woman deserving of a golf championship.

Maybe golf could finally be added to the Olympics as an event in the decathlon replacing the 1,500-meter run.
