As a graduate student in social work, I applaud Whitworth College in Spokane for providing its students with the opportunity to travel across the U.S. and witness firsthand the racial, social and economic injustices that infest this country (“College classes build bridges between races,” Page 1, Jan. 19).
It’s disturbing, though, that the group of 21 students are mainly psychology, religion and social-service majors who would seemingly be interested in these issues even without the benefit of this kind of experience. What if the business, law, technology and engineering students took such an interest in these issues and incorporated a multicultural perspective into their work that supported social and economic justice for everyone?
Since it is these students who will be our future leaders and lawmakers (and not the social science majors), universities should be giving them this critical exposure to social issues in the hope that the knowledge gained is not forgotten in their careers.
