State Sen. Henry Stallings, acquitted last month of misdemeanor tax evasion charges, pleaded guilty Monday to taking more than $100 under false pretenses, according to a spokesman for the state attorney general.

Christopher De Witt, a spokesman for Atty. Gen. Frank Kelley, said Stallings made it clear he understood that he had broken the law.

De Witt said Stallings, a Detroit Democrat, entered the plea before Wayne County Circuit Judge Sean Cox. He said Cox will hold the plea “under advisement” for one year.

If Stallings has no further legal problems, Cox will reduce the crime from a felony to a misdemeanor of taking money less than $100 under false pretenses, De Witt said.

Kelley contended that Stallings used a member of his Senate staff as an employee at his Detroit business last year. Stallings owns an art gallery and framing shop in Detroit.
