Thanks for your excellent and far-sighted Jan. 16 editorial calling for a meaningful State Department response to the friendship overtures from Iran’s new president, Mohammad Khatami. Unfortunately, State continues to sit on its hands.
Despite its repudiation at the polls, the reactionary clergy still hold the major levers of power in Iran. They oppose the Khatami overtures vociferously.
Our failure to respond positively will be used by the ayatollahs to show the Khatami policy to be a failure and may well lead to his ouster.
Add to Cuban non-recognition and Oslo accord timidity another Clinton foreign policy do-nothing example.
